2012 GROUSE OBSERVATION

March 31- April 1, April 7-8 (Easter weekend), 14-15, 21-22, and 28-29, 2012, Saturdays-Sundays, 5:30-9:30 AM, Gore Bay Airport, Gore Bay, Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada.

By appointment only, through Tom Moore, Ann Arbor, Michigan (734-665-0276, temoore@umich.edu), Reservations required, on or before March 10. Not available through the Airport staff. Details at www.miserybay.org, “EVENTS.” A fee of $26 per person per day is required. For questions regarding your reservation after March 10, contact BOTH Local Coordinator Sylvia Kemp, Gore Bay (705-282-3023, smkandjmf@gmail.com) and Tom Moore.

School and Community Groups
 School classes or community groups interested in special tours should write to miserybay@xplornet.com after May 21 to make arrangements. Special group tours can be available from late May through early Fall, depending on availability of guides.

"In 2012 the Visitors Centre will be staffed and open on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and daily during July and August.
The Annual General Meeting of the Friends of Misery Bay members will be on Saturday, June 16, at 10:00 AM at the Visitors Centre."

Friends of Misery Bay Provincial Nature Reserve Park

Friends of Misery Bay is a registered non-profit charity devoted to supporting the Misery Bay Provincial Nature Reserve in its mandates of protection (especially of its rare alvar habitats), research and education (See alvar photograph below, sparse vegetation on limestone bedrock.). We are currently involved in:

  • extending and improving hiking trails

  • hosting Sharp-tailed Grouse observation blind in communal courtship area

  • hosting summer nature events, such as "The Miniature World of Mosses"

  • surveying and expanding park boundaries

  • selling gift shop items (cards, hats, T-shirts, etc.) to raise funds for our projects
